The heart of the Karoo was beating with renewed excitement this past Saturday, October 4th, as the beloved Colesberg Skaapfees made its triumphant return after a multi-year absence. The long-awaited festival, held at the Hoërskool Colesberg Sportgrounds, was more than just a celebration; it was a revival of tradition and a powerful reunion for a community eager to reconnect. Under the wide-open Karoo sky, the air buzzed with the spirit of a homecoming.
The day’s festivities began with a burst of energy. Participants joined a colorful fun walk, while cyclists tackled a challenging race organized by the Colesberg Rotary, both events setting a joyful and active tone. The festival was a true showcase of Karoo culture, both old and new. Attendees were treated to captivating performances by traditional Riel and Gumboot dance troupes, their rhythmic steps echoing the heartbeat of the region.
Proving that the Skaapfees is an event with a character all its own, the program featured a series of unique local competitions that drew crowds and laughter. A highlight for many was the lamb show competition, where local farmers showcased their finest stock. The ultimate test of strength was on display during a thrilling strongman competition hosted by RX Fitness, where athletes performed incredible ats. Alongside this, spirited participants battled it out in wire car races, a nostalgic nod to childhood ingenuity, while the famous “bokdrol spoeg” (buck droppings spitting) contest provided a hilarious and uniquely South African spectacle. The day also saw the crowning of the 2025 Mr. & Miss Skaapfees, adding a touch of glamour to the rustic festivities.
No festival is complete without a feast, and the Skaapfees delivered in abundance. While some enjoyed the traditional Karoo delicacy of sheep head and others opted for comforting favorites like pancakes and chip ‘n dip, a major focal point was the live broadcast of the Rugby Championship final. Tense excitement filled the air as locals packed the beer tent, their eyes glued to a large screen as they watched the Springboks take on Argentina’s Pumas. The nail-biting 29-27 victory for South Africa erupted in a massive cheer, adding to the day’s celebratory atmosphere and fueling the laughter and camaraderie of the boeresport that followed.
As evening fell, the festival culminated in a grand finale with a live performance by popular singer Barto Swiegers. His music provided the perfect soundtrack to end a successful and memorable day, leaving everyone with a sense of joy and anticipation for the festival’s continued return.
More than just a collection of events, the 2025 Colesberg Skaapfees was a success because it brought people together. It was a testament to the town’s resilient spirit and the deep-seated need for community. The laughter, the competition, and the shared experiences have breathed new life into a cherished tradition. This was driven by the main organizer, ATKV – COLESBERG, and would not have been possible without the generous support of business sponsors The Courier Guy, Karoo Beverages, Savemor & Tops, BKB, N1 Truck Tyres Colesberg and Astron Energy Colesberg, as well as the host, Hoërskool Colesberg. Here’s to hoping the Skaapfees is back to stay, cementing its place as a cornerstone of Karoo culture for years to come.
